ISEAT – 7thInternational Symposium on ElectroAcoustic Technologies will take place on November 9 – 10, 2019. Dr. A. J. Svobodnik is one of the invited speakers. His speech will feature the topic “Virtual Development of Automotive Audio Systems.”


It is well understood and accepted that measurements of an audio system cannot be articulated into a descriptive form that explains how a system will sound subjectively. Ultimately, a listening test is required. This challenge has been particularly daunting during the product development phase where simulations of digital prototypes can provide tremendous efficiency improvements for how a system will measure acoustically. Frequency response, distortion, directivity, temporal attributes and even nonlinear transducer effects can be predicted but ultimately, a listening test is still required.

This paper discusses a virtual development environment where a loudspeaker radiating into a listening space, i.e. a car cabin, is simulated and formed into an auralization that can be listened to on headphones. The binaural room impulse response (BRIR) is generated from a multiphysical, vibro-electroacoustical CAE-based simulation model of the loudspeaker (transducer and enclosure) and the listening space, as well as a model for binaural hearing of humans. A hybrid model divided by frequency range relative to cabin dimensions is utilized to optimize simulation efficiency and accuracy. A finite element method for the low and mid frequencies is used along with Ray Tracing for the mid and high frequency range. Typical applications for the auralized BRIR include assessment of infotainment as well as active noise control (ANC) systems. A powerful benefit of having an auralized BRIR is the ability to integrate digital signal processing tools that allow optimization of components with time and frequency tuning and equalization techniques that can be listened to in real time.
